Antioxidant Activity and Release Kinetics of Caffeic and p-Coumaric Acids from Hydrocolloid-Based Active Films for Healthy Packaged Food

International audience; Sustainable hydrocolloid-based films containing natural antioxidants, caffeic and p-coumaric acids at different concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 5%, and 10% w/w of polymers, were designed for packing fatty foods. Antioxidant activities and kinetics for all film formulations were assessed using radical scavenging activity (DPPH), reducing power, and iron chelating ability. Release kinetics of the antioxidants from the films into a food simulant (96% ethanol) were analyzed. Abstract Biological actions of 4 commonly used synthetic antioxidants — butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, ethoxquin and propul gallate — on the molecular, cellular and organ level are compiled. Such actions may be divided into modulation of growth, macromolecule synthesis and differentiation, modulation of immune response, interference with oxygen activation and miscellaneous. Moreover, an overview of beneficial and adverse interactions of these antioxidants with exogenous noxae is given. Increase in Bcl-2 phosphorylation and reduced levels of BH3-only Bcl-2 family proteins in kainic acid-mediated neuronal death in the rat brain.

Kainic acid induces excitotoxicity and nerve cell degeneration in vulnerable regions of rat brain, most markedly in hippocampus and amygdala. Part of the cell death following kainic acid is apoptotic as shown by caspase 3 activation and chromatin condensation. Here we have studied the regulation of pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins belonging to the Bcl-2 family in rat hippocampus and amygdala by kainic acid in relationship to ensuing neuronal death. The pro-apoptotic protein Bax was up-regulated in hippocampus 6 h after kainic acid administration. Untargeted metabolomics to explore the oxidation processes during shelf life of pork patties treated with guarana seed extracts

The changes of metabolites in pork patties with different antioxidants added (control without antioxidants, 200 mg kg(-1) butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and 250 mg kg(-1) guarana seed extracts (GSEs)) under modified atmosphere (80% O-2 and 20% CO2) for 18 days of refrigerated storage were evaluated. Untargeted metabolomic approach based on UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS analysis was applied. GSE phytochemical profile revealed a wide variety of compounds (caffeine, glycerol 1-propanoate, amino acids, alkaloids and glycerophospholipids), together with antioxidants (tyrosols, procyanidins and flavonoids). Targeting BCL-2 family proteins to overcome drug resistance in non-small cell lung cancer.

Cytotoxic chemotherapies are standard of care for patients suffering from advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, objective responses are only achieved in 20% of cases and long-term survival is rarely observed. Clinically applied anticancer drugs exert at least some of their activities by inducing apoptosis. A critical step in apoptotic signal transduction is the permeabilization of the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM), which is regulated by the BCL-2 family of proteins. Induction of rat hepatic epoxide hydratase by dietary antioxidants

Abstract Supplementation of rat diet with butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole, or ethoxyquin resulted in increased liver epoxide hydratase activity. The increase was obvious at 0.1% and amounted to 200–400% at 0.5%. Increased activity was accompanied by increased proportion of the epoxide hydratase band in SDS polyacrylamide gels, indicating induction of the enzyme. Ethoxycoumarin deethylase activity and cytochrome b5 concentrations were moderately elevated while cytochrome P-450 concentrations and aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase activity remained at control levels. Mutagenicity induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (BHP) or cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) in Salmonella typhimurium TA102 was effectively reduced by flavonols with 3',4'-hydroxyl groups such as fisetin, quercetin, rutin, isoquercitrin, hyperoxide, myricetin, myricitrin, robinetin, and to a lesser extent also by morin and kaempferol (ID50=0.25-1.05 micromol per plate). With the exception of isorhamnetin, rhamnetin, morin, and kaempferol, closely similar results were obtained with both peroxides. Involvement of hydrogen and lipid peroxides in acute tobacco smoking-induced platelet hyperactivity

Previous studies have established that cigarette smoking results in acute platelet hyperaggregability. We investigated whether changes in plasma oxidative properties could occur after smoking and whether such changes could be responsible for this enhanced platelet activity. In the present work, we report that platelets from nonsmokers become hyperactive after incubation with plasma prepared from blood of smokers obtained 10 min after smoking.
